This is a fairly easy tutorial, and uses
selections.
It assumes a working knowledge of the PSP
tools/layers.
To get started, you will need Paint Shop
Pro, which
you can download a 30 day trial version
of Here
This tutorial was written with Version 7.02,
but
I'm sure it can be done with other versions.
Download my selection files from the folder
below.
I have included Harvey and Henrietta's eyes
in the
selections zip file, in case you don't want
to bother
making them free-hand. Unzip the selections
to
your PSP selections folder. If you
do not have one
create one by going to your PSP folder in
Program
Files, open your PSP folder and go to File?New/Folder.
Name your folder Selections.
Let's get started!
Open a new image 400x400, transparent/16million
colors.
This is bigger than we need, but gives us
lots of room.
Remember to save your work often.
Add a new layer and name it hat. Go
to Selections/Load
from disk and load the hat.sel file.
Flood fill
with
a
color of your choice. I used #C0FFFF
Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply a cutout
with these
settings:
Deselect.
Add another layer and name it hatband.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk and load the hatband.sel
file. Flood fill
with a color of your choice. I used
black. Do not apply
the cutout to this layer.
Add another layer, naming it harvbody. Go
to Selections/
Load from disk and load the harvbody1.sel
file. Flood fill
with black. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Deselect.
Add yet another layer, naming it body2.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk and load the harvbody2.sel
file. Flood fill
with white. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Deselect.
Add another layer, naming it harvbeak.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk, and load the harvbeak.sel
file. Flood fill
with #EC742C. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Add another layer and repeat as above with
his feet, using
the harvfeet.sel file.
Deselect.
Now open the eye.psp included in the zip
file if you are
going to use it. Go to Edit/Copy and
paste the eye as
a new layer. Then go to Image/Mirror
and place the eye
where you want it. See my image.
Add another new layer and name it stem.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk, and load the hatstem.sel
file. Flood fill
with #008000. Do not apply cutout
to the stem layer.
On the same layer, load the hatflower.sel
file and repeat
above steps. I filled my flower with
#F72939, but the
choice, again, is yours. After applying
the same cutout we
have been using all along to the flower,
deselect it, then
click your selection tool
set on Circle/Feather 0/Antialias
checked and draw a tiny circle in the middle
of your flower.
I found it easier to zoom in
on the flower first. I flood
filled my middle with #FFFF80.
Our Harvey is finished, so go to Layers/Merge
Visible and
turn that layer off.
Now, let's do Henrietta!
Add a new layer, naming it henribody1.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk and load the henribody1.sel
file. Flood fill
with black. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Deselect.
Add another layer, naming it henribeak.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk and load the henribeak.sel
file. Flood fill
with #EC742C. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Deselect.
Add another layer and repeat as above with
her feet, using
the henrifeet.sel file.
Deselect.
Add another layer, naming it henribody2.
Go to Selections/
Load from disk and load the henribody2.sel
file. Flood fill
with White. Do not deselect.
Go to Selections/Float and apply same cutout.
Deselect.
Make the eye.psp your active image.
Go to Edit/Copy and
paste the eye as a new layer and place it
where you want it.
Do not mirror the eye for Henrietta. See
my image.
We're almost finished!
Add another new layer and name it bow.
Load the henribow.sel
file. Flood fill it with a color of
your choice. Do not
deselect. Go to Selections/Float and
apply same cutout.
Deselect. I added some "detail" to
my bow using the paintbrush
tool with the following settings:
Jill was one of my "testers" for this tutorial,
and
when she sent me her results, she had put
a nice
drop shadow on the penguins. If you
wish to use
a drop shadow, use settings V-0, H-0, Opacity
52
and Blur 18. It really adds a nice
effect. Thanks Jill!!
Now, merge Henrietta's layers visible, turn
on your Harvey layer,
crop your image and tube it (or whatever),
and you're done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If
